The ecological principles at work in each period remain the same across millennia: “although the cast is different, the play is the same”. As Halliday shows, “Earth’s dynamism throughout geological history provides a natural laboratory”. From the frigid, sand-blown plains of Alaska 20,000 years ago in the Pleistocene, with its lumbering mammoths (“a universal symbol of a lost past”), to Australia in the Ediacaran era, 550 million years ago when the Eoandromeda emerged, one of the earliest creatures we can call an animal – a relative of comb jellies in today’s oceans: “what exists now can only ever come from what existed before.”īut this is more than just an exercise in intellectual curiosity. Like a time-travelling tour guide, he introduces us to the extraordinary creatures and often inhospitable terrains that existed in these now-extinct ecosystems, including dinosaur-dominated forests and a glass reef thousands of kilometres long. It is an immensely impressive attempt to use imagination to bring scientific research into the deep history of our planet vividly alive, mentally stripping away the hedgerows, buildings and infrastructure of human urban civilization, to reveal the much older and stranger landscapes that once existed.Įach of his 16 chapters moves progressively further back in time, using fossils and geological data to recreate what it would have been like to experience a particular landscape. In what he admits is a personal interpretation of the deep past, he has written a wonderfully rich popularisation of his specialism. In his day job, Halliday studies fossils and geology to find clues as to how extinct creatures fitted into diverse communities of organisms “that courted and fell sick, showed off bright feathers or flowers, called and buzzed”. In this remarkable book, Thomas Halliday – a researcher in the Department of Earth Sciences at Birmingham University – travels back through time to explore our planet’s previous landscapes and ecosystems, or “otherlands”. If those 4.5 billion years of history were condensed into the span of a single day, dinosaurs were destroyed 21 minutes before the end and written human history wouldn’t begin until the last tenth of a second. Life itself is 4 billion years old, with multi-celled organisms emerging some 2 billion years ago. The Earth’s geological history stretches back 4.5 billion years. Critical responses to all three were mixed. In the Kitchen followed, a meandering tale of a London chef in crisis, and then Untold Story, an odd novel in which Princess Diana fakes her death and moves to small-town America. First came Alentejo Blue, loosely linked vignettes set in a Portuguese village that bore almost no relation in style, conviction or tone to Brick Lane. In the decade following her bestselling 2003 debut, Brick Lane, which was shortlisted for the Booker prize then turned into a film, Monica Ali produced three more novels. Wilkerson has a deft narrative touch and she activates the history in her pages, bringing all its horror and possibility to light, illuminating both the bygone and the present. This is an American reckoning and so it should be. In Caste, Wilkerson sets out to understand American hierarchy, which she compares with two of the best known caste systems in the world: that of India, the very birthplace of caste, and of Nazi Germany, where caste as a modern experiment in barbarism was ultimately vanquished. It was while working on her sweeping, Pulitzer prize-winning first book, The Warmth of Other Suns, a history of African Americans’ great migration out of the South, that Wilkerson realised she was studying a deeply ingrained caste system that had been in place longer than the nation itself had existed, dating back to colonial Virginia. The full pageantry of American cruelty is on display in Caste, an expansive interrogation of racism, institutionalised inequality and injustice.

They are either innocent, pure and dependent on men, or dangerous, seductive and independent, either portrayed as femmes fatales or damsels in distress.Īfter the unfortunate death of his son Conrad by the mysterious helmet, his wife Hippolita sends Matilda to take care of her father. Female characters reach extremities: they are either extremely good or evil. These stereotypical perceptions always take the form of opposite pairs: the saint and the sinner, the virgin and the whore, or the angel and the witch (Ledoux, 2017). The second female role, being fragile and vulnerable, gives heroes someone to rescue and often becomes the prize for their brave endeavours (Nabi, 2017). In this case, the female embodies the pain/pleasure paradox that has come to be synonymous with Gothic literature. The first is dangerous, yet powerfully attractive. There are two main female roles within Gothic literature the predator and the victim. The presentation of the female figure appears to be heavily based on prevalent stereotypes concerning female nature (Ledoux, 2017). However, the damsel in distress also contributes to the story’s climax and keeps it progressing. She is a sentimental heroine who typically is clueless about the situation around her, representing vulnerability and someone gullible (Mermin, 1986). The Damsel is also characterised by her beauty, virtue and innocence. Within this scope, examples from Gothic literature have been chosen for the analysis to break down the similarities among female literary characters. This essay will examine the essence and characteristics of the damsel in distress character by comparatively analysing victims and femmes fatales in horror narration. Two literary examples representing this notion are Matilda, in Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto (1764/2004), and Antonia, in Matthew Lewis’s The Monk (1796/1998). However, though these female characters are portrayed as feeble and helpless, the “damsel in distress” character, paradoxically, seems to constitute an ultimate threat to the system of the mighty patriarch. Various epithets are attributed to female characters in Gothic fiction: damsels in distress, victims, domestic governesses, evils, predators or prisoners. Typically, a female figure is incarcerated in a castle or monastery and tortured by a sadistic nobleman or members of a religious order. The focus on sensibility and vulnerability in literature introduces a new type of character: the “damsel in distress," a core character in the Gothic genre. You can also use MacPorts to install open-source software like GIMP. Mac users won’t find common command-line tools like nmap or wget, and there’s no native package manager on the Mac to provide them. If you read our post on Homebrew, you know that macOS is missing some “standard” Linux terminal commands out of the box. This saves you the trouble of downloading repositories from GitHub and building software from source packages while still getting access to a wide range of Linux’s best command-line tools and GUI applications. When you find what you need, MacPorts downloads and installs the appropriate software and dependencies in the right place. Like any package manager, MacPorts searches a library of downloadable software. Most of these applications are open-source, command-line utilities, but there are a fair share of “real” open-source, GUI-based applications. Sunny dances with Holmes in their palatial apartment, wearing a promotional mask of her face. They focus mainly on the machinations of the business, played for high camp, with pop songs turned up loud on the soundtrack. Sequences like these are the best parts of the Hulu show-the funniest, the most absorbing and surprising. Now she just needs to go home and convince Sunny-the older boyfriend she secretly lives with-that he should give her the $20 million and come aboard instead of breaking up. “I’m a girl who had a dream to change the world, and I just didn’t know how hard it would be.…” It takes a minute to notice that she is channeling her Genius service provider, repeating some of her lines verbatim: “I did everything right! I followed all the steps! I was just too quick.…” Then she makes the crucial pivot: She’s bringing in her own adult, “an old friend,” Sunny Balwani (Naveen Andrews), as COO, with a $20 million personal investment, and they plan to start flogging their tests straight to retail customers-like an Apple store for blood. At this point, to the visible discomfort of the roomful of older men, Holmes begins to weep. They tell her she needs “adult supervision”: Her futuristic blood-testing gadget is still nonfunctional, FDA approval is nowhere in sight, the promised big pharma deals are stalled, the design team has quit, and she’s hemorrhaging cash. Soon, we see Holmes confront the board of Theranos as they attempt to push her out as CEO. You’re just a person.” The Genius looks a little stunned by this, but it’s only when she realizes she has messed up professionally-all Holmes’s data has been wiped-that she begins to stammer and cry: “I did everything right! I mean, I followed all the steps! I was just too quick.…” Holmes, meanwhile, consoles her server with the insight that everything will be OK for her, in the sense that “Nothing you do will matter, because you don’t really care. The Genius reassures her customer that the information on her existing device will only be visible for a few seconds while it’s transferred. Here the two nervy women seem to be trying to give each other a pep talk. In this scene from Hulu’s new miniseries The Dropout, Holmes has not yet adopted her well-known deep voice or the regulation black Issey Miyake turtleneck she’d wear in homage to Apple founder Steve Jobs. One is a Genius for hire the other, played by Amanda Seyfried, is Elizabeth Holmes, the Stanford dropout who founded the startup Theranos, claimed the company could run hundreds of medical tests using a mere finger prick of blood, received media fanfare as the youngest self-made female billionaire, and is now, many years later, awaiting sentencing for wire fraud. Inside the soothing, edgeless white of an Apple Genius Bar in Palo Alto, two blonde-haired women widen their innocent eyes at each other across an unbridgeable gulf of understanding. A coach can help you do this in a safe environment and provide you with tools too. The role of a coach in helping develop self-awareness Maybe ask your friends and family to give you feedback. Volunteer for a charity or help out a neighbour. It is generally agreed that there are degrees of self-awareness. Self-awareness is the ability to see yourself clearly and objectively through reflection and introspection. In the remainder of this post I’m going to talk about the first of these elements, self-awareness. There are six elements generally referred to which form the basis of resilience: We know that mental health and wellbeing has suffered and unless we become better at providing mechanisms to develop our capacity to reframe and bounce back the numbers will continue to grow and more people will suffer.Ī starting point for developing resilience However, we know that more disruption is on the way, whether this is due to climate change, technological innovation, or social & political change. It has challenged many of our social norms, our expectations of our governments, caused division amongst family and friends. We all know that the last 2 years of living through the pandemic has impacted people in many different ways. Why it is important to grow your capacity to bounce back That’s not to say it’s been perfect (just ask the family), but at the end of the day, when I reflect on all the experiences over the last 8 years of setting up and running a business, I would not have changed anything. Reading the stories of others, who have had far greater challenges in life than me, also helped me to keep things in perspective. You need to learn from your mistakes and failures, choose your response to challenging situations, maintain a sense of perspective and become an expert at reframing. Stepping away a full time job and starting your own business is definitely one way to develop your resilience. Why being a business owner builds resilience It is a skill that can be learnt and developed over time. Resilience is not something that always comes naturally. To self-nurture and take control of the ‘inner game’. Our capacity to reframe and recover from challenging and difficult situations. However, for me it is a powerful word, it relates to our uniqueness as humans. Resilience is probably one of those over used words, like 'transformation', 'pivot' and 'unprecedented' and you may be fed up of hearing it. So what has helped me to bounce back and re-energised? However, I had forgotten the repercussions of all the strong pain medications I had in hospital, and spent a couple of days moping around, bursting into tears at the slightest thing and terrible brain fog. Back at home and starting to move around again, I began to think things would quickly get back to normal. Luckily nothing broken but I did spend 2 days in hospital with a very sore back and grazes. Having had great intentions to be posting more blogs and getting 2022 off to a great start, I was unexpectedly side tracked after being knocked off my bike on a Sunday morning ride. Just when I thought things were on track, two weeks ago I hit a bump on the road - well actually a car hit me onto the road. How do you cope when things go off course? This means you’ll be relying on luck for this weapon to drop from activities. Why are you not using Sunshot? It's fantastic for making things go boom. Also, note that Sunshot’s catalyst increases the gun’s range and stability. With waves of enemies in Gambit often close together, getting the Sunshot train going will make quick work of your foes. Oh, and each explosive kill can chain to any nearby enemy.įor Gambit, and like Null Composure, Sunshot’s chain explosive capabilities are fantastic. Sunburn allows the weapon to fire explosive rounds and highlight damaged targets, and then Sun Blast disintegrates your enemies in a fiery explosion. Sunshot has two exotic perks that work in tandem. To convince you to use this hand cannon, even though it has been in the game since release, here first are the base stats: Sunshot is an exotic hand cannon in the Energy slot, and it’s one of my favorite weapons in the franchise. Use Xur’s Fated Engram if you don’t yet have it - it guarantees an exotic to drop that you don’t already have. This means that you can either get it from completing activities or Xur. Huckleberry is Tex Mechanica, which means it's automatically excellent. Pair that with Rampage and Huckleberry lets you continually chew through enemies like a knife through butter. As you hold down the trigger, the rate of fire and recoil increases while kills with the weapon reload the entire magazine (with the catalyst). However, consider its perk, Ride the Bull. Huckleberry is often overshadowed by other such submachine guns as Shayura’s Wrath and Multimach CCX. However, when you need a gun to clear enemies as quickly as possible, Huckleberry is a very solid option. One of my favorite Destiny weapons that you don’t see all too often. Especially in Gambit.Īt number eight, we have the exotic submachine gun, Huckleberry. Nice and easy, Le Monarque can also be acquired from the Monument to Lost Lights kiosk in the Tower. Le Monarque is the bow for almost every activity. So if you’re rapidly dispatching enemies, don’t be surprised to see your health regenerating! How do I get Le Monarque? It is also good to note that with the Witch Queen expansion, Le Monarque was given a catalyst in the form of Unrelenting. And with the intrinsic Snapshot, slinging arrows is your easy path to success. This is a fantastic way to quickly clear a group of enemies in Gambit. And precision hits with said arrows spread poison to nearby enemies. Le Monarque’s exotic perk, Poison Arrows, does just what it says. An exotic bow in the energy slot, this weapon leaves guardians weak or dead in the Crucible. While not overpowered, Le Monarque is undoubtedly top tier. You just need an ascendant shard or two, some materials, and a mountain of glimmer. This exotic sniper rifle can easily be purchased from the Monument to Lost Lights kiosk in the Tower. Sounds great for boss damage, right? Yes, but consider consuming your magazine and then invading the enemy team to one-shot guardians to the body. With four bullets in the magazine, the exotic perk Honed Edge allows you to convert said magazine into one round with increased range and damage. Such is why, in strictly PvE content, Izanagi’s is so coveted. Izanagi’s Burden hits hard, and each shot sounds like a hammer hitting an anvil.
